My
good friend Shawn Spurlock first introduced me to Lowlife,
an early series by Ed Brubaker. I don't know if I ever thanked him, but
I don't know if he deserves thanks. You see, Brubaker is close to brilliance,
but far too infrequent. So by being a fan of his work, you're often a
fan of nothing. In that regard, Brubaker shares space with another brilliant
creator, Adrian Tomine; they have something to say, but don't say it with
any real frequency, for whatever the reason. You wait and wait and then
finally something comes along. At The Seams came along, but
I had read the stories already. I wanted something new. So when it came
across my desk, I resisted the urge to re-read the work. But I did, and
found it as fresh, at times sad, and poignant as when I first read the
stories it contains. At The Seams combines three stories
that could be happening anywhere, at any time, all told in a low-key and
all essential reading. Brubaker, through his words and his art, puts you
wherever he wants you, and opens up his world to your eyes. So I guess
I do owe Shawn thanks, and next time something by Brubaker comes my way,
reprint or not, I'll accept it with open arms.
