From March 19 through March 27 the Kitchen in New York City played venue to "The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island, or The Friends of Dr. Rushower," a new musical written, directed and designed by Ben Katchor with a sung-through rock score composed by Mark Mulcahy. The musical, which takes as its starting point a strip that originally appeared in Metropolis Magazine (and later reprinted in The Beauty Supply District), employs Katchor's artwork throughout. Katchor's drawings are projected onto three separate scrims that actors perform against and interact with. Some segments feature partial animation.

The Kitchen generously provided Indy Magazine with several pieces of artwork Katchor created for the show, and permitted Indy to send a photographer to the production's dress rehearsal. Indy Magazine presents the following slide-show, displaying some of Katchor's full-color artwork in its original form and showing via Tom Hart's photographs how Katchor's artwork was incorporated into a live stage production. continue...
