In another sequence from "City of Glass," Karasik and Mazzuchelli show the visual resonance between a cityscape, a maze, and a thumbprint. The symbolism is germane to that book's concerns; the form graphically speaks the text. "Static," the fourth chapter of "Blankets," employs a similar series of "rhyming" images, but towards an unclear effect. As rendered by Thompson, the static on the television screen on page 235 resembles facial stubble, to no discernible end. The transition seems merely clever. The image recurs in the snow on pages 260 and 261, but again, the point is unclear. Unity is often expressed through recurrent themes and imagery, but recurrence alone does not necessarily denote unity.
