Destroy All Comics #3
By

James Kochalka
Superstar #7
With this issue I've decided I really don't like the way James draws.
The art in this comic is simple and functional, but annoyingly bad. It
seems like he doesn't even try. Also, the way James uses zip-a-tone is
ugly and distracting. It's a shame that the art is so awful, because as
a writer it seems like James is getting better. This issue features his
most interesting and well written story yet, The Good Boy. The
first half of The Good Boy focuses on James as a young boy, drawing
comics and hanging out with his best friend. When his friend starts smiking
pot, it scares James and he doesn't do any. Later, the story jumps forward
to James in his late teens, and we witness him transformed by time and
the drugs that he now freely ingests. The contrast between his opinions
as a small child and as a teenager is what makes this an interesting meditation
on the way people can change, even if they don't want to. James point,
that "in growing up you lose innocence but gain power," is very insightful.
