Hipster Reviews

Ullman, EYE
September/October 1999
Urban Hipster, in its first issue from Alternative Comics, follows
several young, single denizens of a city, presumably Seattle, and the
trials and tribulations of their daily lives. It's easy to be cynical
about this oft-mined premise, but creators David Lasky and Greg Stump
realize they're not doing Maus here they inject their strips
with just the right amount of wry humor and genuine emotion, and the result
is an endearing and enjoyable read. Curiously, no credits appear anywhere
in in the book to indicate who wrote or drew any particular strip, which
is more evidence of their confidence in the material. By jamming nine
stories into 32 pages, Lasky and Stump have created the comics equivalent
of a good pop record. Hipster is light and breezy, but wistful
enough to keep you humming right along.
